Description
A Chippendale Figured Mahogany Bonnet Top Desk-and-Bookcase
Pennsylvania, 18th Century and later
The drawer pulls, while seemingly of the period, are replacements; the finial is replaced; likely an overall marriage.
Height 98 3/4 x width 42 1/2 x depth 23 3/4 inches.
This lot is located in Cincinnati.
Condition
In overall fine and stable condition. Retains a fair even patina and finished throughout, though the lid seems a bit more glossy than the rest of the piece. Few scuffs, marks and scratches consistent with age and use. Few areas of minor loss to the edges of the cornice molding. Pulls and finial are replaced. The lower case appears to have been deepened by about 3 inches, suggesting that the feet are either moved or early replacements. The lower case previously fitted with bun feet, but the current bracket feet do show some age. The top and lower case are likely a marriage. The hinges have been repositioned and the piece of wood at the front of the desk to the interior is likely a replacement. There are associated patches to the slant lid due to the repositioning of the hinges. It is possible that the slant lid, while early, is associated. The upper latch for the upper case door has been replaced. The top previously fitted with dividers that have since been lost and the filets have been filled with shims that can be removed.
